Ingredients list:
- 3g matcha (about 1 heaped teaspoon). Try our Organic Ceremonial Matcha or our Premium Matcha .
- 50ml hot water at 80°C
- 150ml milk of your choice. For hot lattes you can use 150–200 ml steamed, frothy milk.
- Optional sweetener (honey is our favourite)
Recommended tools:
- Matcha bowl
- Bamboo whisk (chasen)
- Fine sieve (optional but helpful)
- Thermometer or a kettle with temperature control (for those looking for precision!)
Step-by-step: Matcha base
- Bloom your whisk: (Don't skip this if you're using a bamboo whisk!) Add hot water to a cup and pop the bamboo whisk in to soak for a minute. This softens the prongs and helps to prevent damage.
- Measure and sift: Measure 3g of your matcha of choice and sift it into your bowl to remove any lumps. Sifting is optional as top-quality matcha should have minimal lumps (but it can make whisking easier!).
- Add water: Pour in 50 ml of water at 80°C. Water that’s too hot can burn the matcha making it bitter. To avoid this, let your freshly boiled water sit for 5 minutes before using. Or if you can't wait, add a splash of cold water to your boiled water!
- Break up clumps: Using the softened whisk, gently press and dab to disperse any powder at the bottom.
- Whisk to microfoam: Whisk briskly in a M or W motion for at least 20 seconds, keeping the whisk off the bottom of the bowl. You're done when the surface looks nice and glossy with a fine microfoam!
You now have the perfect matcha concentrate! From here you can choose whether it's going to be a hot or iced latte...
Iced Matcha Latte (our favourite)
- Fill your glass with ice.
- Add 150 ml cold milk of your choice.
- Pour in your whisked matcha concentrate.
- Stir well.
- Sweeten to taste with a little honey. Tip: dissolve your honey with a splash of warm water first so it can easily blend into your cold milk.
Hot Matcha Latte
- Pour your whisked matcha concentrate into your mug.
- Top with 150–200 ml steamed, frothy milk.
- Stir gently to combine.
- Sweeten to your taste with some honey (You can add it to the milk while steaming or to the cup before you pour, if you know how you like it!).
